Humane Education : Overview

When man learns to understand and control his own behaviour as well as he is learning to understand and control the behavior of crop plants and domestic animals, he may be justified in believing that he has become civilized.
- E. G. Stakman

The SPCA Humane Education program promotes animal welfare education, awareness and activities to enable participants to be well-acquainted with local and international animal welfare issues and responsible pet ownership.

Plans For 2009

Our H.E. Program in 2009 will focus on the Kindergarten and Primary School strains. We are in the midst of developing lesson plans and materials for this age group, as well as evaluation and monitoring strategies. We also hope to improve our range of educational flyers and brochures, adding new materials to the current range. Throughout 2009, we will also be working on revamping our Education Packs – producing new-and-improved Packs for 3 different age groups. SPCA’s Education officer will also work hand-in-hand with the 6th Grade teachers of ISKL to have a wholesome program for the students - aptly named the Super Pet Care Agents (SPCA!). The proposed program will include volunteering at the shelter, educational talks at the school, multimedia competitions, and more!

SPCA Selangor also facilitates “Pet Clubs” in two colleges, and in 2009 we hope to increase their participation in SPCA activities. Finally, we will also be having our Humane Education Program and materials available online at the SPCA Website - providing PDF versions of all flyers, brochures and posters that can be downloaded. Lesson plans and activity sheets for kindergarten and primary school strains will also be uploaded, as well as other educational resources and links. We would like to thank all students, teachers, schools and companies that have visited us through the years - we have learnt much from you, and we hope you have learnt from us too!
